Astronomical Reflections

Astronomical Reflections is a blog about Astrophotography. It's about appreciating the wonder and beauty of the Universe (or Multiverse!) and attempting to capture that beauty in photographs. A marriage of Science and Art.

What does "Astronomical Reflections" mean? It has so many different meanings!

Astronomical has two distinct meanings:
  1. Pertaining to astronomy -- the study of the universe as a whole and of objects that exist naturally in space, such as the stars
  2. Of enormous magnitude; immense
"Reflection" has several meanings, including:
  1. An image seen in a mirror or shiny surface.
  2. A manifestation or result: "Her achievements are a reflection of her courage"
  3. A mathematical transformation in which the direction of one axis is reversed or which changes the sign of one of the variables
  4. Serious thought or consideration: "he doesn’t get much time for reflection"
The word is also a sort of pun in that the telescopes I use are often reflecting telescopes, in which the image is literally reflected off the telescope mirrors and onto the CCD of the camera. By putting the two words together, one gets eight (two times four) possible permutations and definitions of the term. Which one of them do I mean? All of them at once!

“It is a beautiful and delightful sight to behold the body of the Moon.” ― Galileo Galilei
